Spelinspektionen Bans Unlicensed Casino Operator and Announces Industry Seminar
The Swedish Gambling Authority, Spelinspektionen, recently made headlines by issuing a ban against another unlicensed gambling operator, Goodwin NV, based in Curaçao. Despite holding a license in the Dutch Caribbean island, Goodwin did not have the necessary permissions to operate in Sweden, leading to the ban.
The authority discovered that Goodwin’s immerion.com brand was targeting Swedish customers by providing information in Swedish, having a Swedish FAQ section, partnering with affiliate websites that catered to Swedish consumers, and allowing Swedish players to create accounts and play on the site. As a result, Spelinspektionen concluded that Goodwin was in violation of Swedish gambling laws.
Upcoming Industry Seminar
On a related note, Spelinspektionen also announced an industry seminar in Stockholm on March 11. The seminar aims to bring together key stakeholders to discuss the state of the Swedish gaming market, with a focus on illegal gambling. Director General Camilla Rosenberg will address the audience, shedding light on the current status of the gambling industry.
The seminar will feature a report on illegal gambling, a panel discussion with legal industry representatives, and talks on countering the promotion of offshore gambling sites by influencers. Furthermore, there will be discussions on preventing gambling harm, especially among younger players, in collaboration with the Public Health Authority, the Swedish Financial Supervisory Authority, and the Swedish Association of Gambling Addiction.
Gambling CEOs will also share insights on the industry’s positive aspects and its economic impact. Participation in the seminar is open to both in-person and digital attendees, with registration closing on February 28. The registration fee is SEK 1,000 for in-person attendees and SEK 500 for digital participants.
Spelinspektionen Addresses Data Breach Rumors
Addressing recent rumors, Spelinspektionen refuted claims of a data breach in Sweden’s national self-exclusion register, Spelpaus. While acknowledging certain issues with the self-exclusion scheme, the authority denied any breach of player data. Despite efforts to protect self-excluded players, offshore companies without licenses continue to target them.
