Vermilion High School Teacher Indicted for Illegal Gambling Operation
A grand jury in Cuyahoga County has charged Kristina Edmison, a 47-year-old social studies teacher and track coach at Vermilion High School, with 23 offenses related to running an illegal gambling operation in Northeast Ohio. The charges include money laundering, conspiracy, and operating unauthorized gaming venues, as reported by the Vermilion Daily.
Illegal Gambling Scheme Uncovered
The investigation revealed that Edmison, along with her co-defendants Lee Edmison Jr. and Lee Edmison III, operated unlicensed electronic slot machines and illegal bingo games under the guise of charitable fundraising from 2018 to 2022. The trio and their associated businesses allegedly set up gaming machines in 13 bars across Cuyahoga County, including locations in Cleveland, Parma, and Garfield Heights, without proper licenses.
Authorities claim that the accused used charity bingo permits to make their activities appear legitimate and as though they were benefiting youth sports groups like the Ohio Junior Hockey Association and the Medina Youth Baseball Association.
Money Laundering Allegations
Businesses linked to Edmison, such as Modern Music & Games, K Zip Services and Repairs, and LJ Modern Properties LLC, were reportedly involved in channeling illegal gaming profits. The prosecution aims to seize over $33,000 in cash, seven bank accounts, several properties, and two vehicles connected to the alleged illicit activities.
Consequences and Legal Proceedings
Following the indictment on March 21, Vermilion Local Schools placed Edmison on paid administrative leave. Superintendent Dr. David Hile emphasized that Edmison is considered innocent until proven guilty and that the district must continue paying her unless formal steps are taken to terminate her employment.
Edmison pleaded not guilty and was released on a personal bond. She is expected to appear in court on May 8 before Judge John O’Donnell. If convicted of ongoing corrupt activities, Edmison could face up to 11 years in prison.
