AUSTRAC Urges Inactive Digital Currency Exchanges to Withdraw Registrations
The Australian Transaction Reports and Analysis Centre (AUSTRAC) has launched a new campaign urging inactive digital currency exchange (DCE) firms to either start operating or risk having their registrations canceled. This initiative, dubbed “Use it or Lose it,” aims to address the issue of dormant DCEs in the country.
Identifying Inactive DCEs
Currently, there are 427 registered DCEs in Australia, but not all of them are actively conducting business. AUSTRAC has expressed concern over the number of inactive firms in the sector, citing the high-risk nature of the cryptocurrency industry. The center believes that inactive businesses could become targets for exploitation by criminals if left unchecked.
Brendan Thomas, AUSTRAC’s CEO, emphasized the importance of keeping registration details updated, even if a firm is not actively trading. The recent action taken by AUSTRAC aims to safeguard the DCE sector from being misused by nefarious actors.
Preventing Criminal Exploitation
Thomas highlighted the potential misuse of cryptocurrency for money laundering, scams, and other illicit activities. By canceling registrations of inactive DCEs, AUSTRAC aims to fortify the sector against criminal exploitation and enhance the integrity of its register.
The cancellation of registrations is in line with AUSTRAC’s authority to act when businesses are no longer providing DCE services. Inactive firms are encouraged to contact AUSTRAC to cancel their registrations voluntarily, with the option to re-apply in the future if circumstances change.
Establishing a Publicly Searchable DCE Register
Alongside addressing inactive DCE services, AUSTRAC plans to develop a publicly accessible DCE register for citizens to verify the legitimacy of cryptocurrency providers. This initiative is aimed at increasing transparency and regulatory oversight in the industry.
Thomas reassured the public that legitimate cryptocurrency providers registered with AUSTRAC are subject to regulatory scrutiny, signaling efforts to weed out criminal elements from the sector. Registration cancelations will be updated on AUSTRAC’s official website to keep stakeholders informed.
With the “Use it or Lose it” campaign and the establishment of a searchable DCE register, AUSTRAC is taking proactive steps to safeguard the integrity of the cryptocurrency industry in Australia.
